Begin by explaining to the children the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. (2D are flat shapes which cannot stand up, 3D stand by themselves and sometimes 2D shapes can be found within them.)
The shape songs help children to remember the different properties of shapes. They can use these properties to help identify a shape. Learn the 2D songs first.
Get your child to practice naming, identifying and drawing 2D shapes. You can play different games / activities to reinforce this.
Finding 2D shapes in the environment
Go on a shape walk or shape scavenger hunt.
Sort objects by shape.
Create patterns using shapes.
Play Guess my shape (same as guess my number but your child has to ask shape related questions)
Look through magazines, junk mail finding different shapes.
Make a shape collage.
