Art

The named Art Subject Leaders at Our Lady's are Mrs A Innes and Miss K Smith

Art teaching at Our Lady's aims to:

  • develop and extend the pupils' visual curiosity, creativity, enquiry and aesthetic sensitivity to both the natural and synthetic world
  • enable the children to respond and enjoy expressing their ideas, feelings and imagination using visual media and practical manipulative skills
  • ensure that pupils become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and craft techniques
  • use a range of resources for both the 'Investigating and Making' and 'Knowledge and Understanding' aspects of Art.
  • develop an appreciation and a critical awareness of the work of artists, designers and crafts people from their own and other cultural heritages
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

At Key Stages 1 and 2 art is taught through the creative curriculum where we develop the key skills in art and design, which are built upon as children move through the school..

Creative activities in Early Years Foundation Stage give the children opportunities to explore, express, communicate their ideas and use their imagination. Creativity is fundamental to successful learning.

The teaching of Art and Design provides all children with opportunities to express themselves freely and also helps them to develop an appreciation and respect for the work of others. Art and design engages, inspires and challenges pupils to invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
